As it has been over 3 years since she was last ridden, I lunged her a couple times both ways to let her get out some of her energy. She was quiet to mount and moved out nicely.
She settled quite quickly after back into the trot, but would show the same response if asked to canter again. Given this, my assessment is that she is quite sour from something in her previous riding career. Perhaps from her racing days or from how she was ridden at a previous home. The lady who surrendered her hadn't ridden her in 3 years so I am guessing it is something from before then.
As such, we didn't get a successful canter today. I didn't want to stress her out either, so we continued our ride at a nice walk and trot instead and enjoyed the sunshine. She moves beautifully and drops her nose without being asked. She really is a lovely mare and we ended our ride on a great note. She stood quietly for me to dismount and was very cuddly when I took her tack off and put her away; not at all sour on the ground.
If you are interested in this beautiful lady and are willing to work with her on progressing under-saddle, we would love to have you out to meet her and consider giving her a chance. She is currently located in Maple Ridge. Her adoption fee is $500 with an extended 30-day trial period.
