Petunia, as some of you might remember, is a 21 year old Fjord x QH mare that we rescued from slaughter in November 2012. She was underweight and moody when she arrived, but warmed up to us through her couple months here. She was then adopted in January 2013, originally to be a trail horse, but is instead living out her days as a lawn ornament receiving star treatment.
In fact, Petunia has such a way of getting into people (and horses) hearts, it seems she has gone from being an adopted equine, to adopting an equine herself. According to her adopters, she has since taken over one of their horses, Texas. Apparently, she has appointed herself Texas' new "mom" to the point where she can call him back from 500 m down the road!
After spending two months with her at the rescue and watching her come out of her shell, she never really seemed to make any real equine friends here and it is so wonderful to know that she has one at home now. Maybe Texas just saw something in her beyond the fact that she is old and probably senile - or maybe he just figured she wouldn't pick on him. I bet that handsome bay boy never thought she would be the boss of him!
Petunia had a rough time - much like many of our other rescues - but it just goes to show that no matter how old you are or how rough you have had it, you still have a place. Hers seems to be hanging out in the sun and keeping her newly adopted friend in line.
Happy trails you old gal!
