When we got there, we found an absolutely adorable Standardbred mare around 14.2hh who is in good shape and right off the track - still has her racing plates on.
She was quite scared and nervous (who could blame her?), but she let us halter her no problem and followed us down the chute and loaded into the trailer without hesitation.
Upon some research, I found out her registered name is "Call Gale". She was on her way for meat, but now has a chance at a new life. She last raced on April 19 with 14 starts in her career and earnings of $5,100 in her career, but was retired because she was too slow.
When we got her home yesterday, we let her settle into her paddock and enjoy the sunshine. Later in the afternoon, Julie went out to give her some treats and scratches and she was so confused about it.
She seems like a doll who was given a bad hand.
P.S. The name on her paperwork was Dan Kramer. He is local and is known for taking in free horses, saying that they will have a great home and turning around and dropping them off for meat. Just as an FYI to the horse community...
