"One of the first things I learned about my Nel from my Nel is that I don't "own" her. She is an independent, smart, opinionated, humorous, sassy, affectionate, gentle, intuitive creature that is allowing me to share her life!
I AM NOT her owner, I AM her guardian. And, I'm fine with that (hysterical laughter and horsey snorts).
Nelly had been sent to auction for a date with the meat man when the universe aligned and she was rescued by J and M (my heroes).
I was told: don't get your hopes up, she may never be well (she had some old injuries), she's unsound, she may never be rideable... Be prepared for the worst and you know I didn't care. I just wanted her! Best decision I've ever made! I won't even bother telling you what my "friends" said!! Suffice to say those people are no longer in our lives.
We've had our fair share of detractors since Nel came home, we were scoffed at; ridiculed. I was told that Nel needed to be with someone who was young (in other words not an old fart like me), who could feed off of her energy who would exercise her every day, who would ride her every day (in others words, probably kill her). Those people have been kicked out of our lives and are not invited back. Nelly and I are happy together. The energy we give each other is the energy we both need. We are now surrounded by kindness and support. What a world of difference it has made.
Our relationship is built on love, trust, kindness and respect. We don't take each other for granted and we both get an absolute giggle out of each other. I don't know who is the bigger goof but I do know this: We are each other's safe place. I protect her, spoil her, love her. She is my Zen place, a place where the universe is aligned and good. A place where I can breathe and we can breathe together.
She is sound now. She has gained weight. The sparkle is back in her eye. She wears corrective shoes and they are a life saver. She is very rideable thanks to the one and only Tara Nicholson, and in the next while (when I've put together everything we will need) we will start riding together. Nothing crazy - short rides spaced apart to start. I am not and will not push her. I am very cautious in her exercising and how often she will be ridden.. I will not allow those injuries to reappear due to lack of concern for her well being on my part. We are not training for the Olympics neither are we weekend warriors.
She is my life coach (she has taught me so much about me (and her) and continues to teach me every day. She protects me and now (since we both love exercise so much - NOT), she has taken it upon herself to be my athletics coach as well. When I take her to exercise she is now making me exercise as well. Walking together around the arena is much more fun than me lungeing her lol.
We're going to take a yoga workshop together. I think it will be good for us and it's not exercise right?!...(I keep telling her that).
I do know she is the very best thing that has happened to me (with the exception of my dogs and birds) and I can't imagine me without her. I Love YOU Nelly!"
