Mickey & Minnie

Mickey and Minnie were rescued on October 18, 2010 from a local stockyard for $0.09/lb. They are both a year old, thin and have umbilical hernias. In the beginning these babies were quite wary of us, especially Mickey.

They were with J&M Acres for a little over a month and in that time gained a fair bit of weight and became much more trusting and relaxed. During there stay, J&M Acres Horse Rescue also had three articles published about them in the local newspaper and another in a local horse magazine to spread their story and awareness about horse slaughter.

After a month and half, the babies went to their new home, arriving on December 5, 2010.

China

China is a 15hh, 20 year old, cremello, Quarter Horse mare. China was actually broke to ride as a 3 year old ond was ridden for a couple of years. She was then owned by a lady on the island who paid board on her for 15 years and just let her hang out and be a horse. As nice as that sounds, she spent those years wearing a halter that was too small.

China found her new home on December 5, 2010 with the babies Mickey and Minnie.

Letter From Their New Mom

I never wanted another horse. With my two geldings already, and the family issues I am going through, another horse was the last thing on my mind, let alone three.

A few months ago, I finally spoke up about something a family member had done to me as a child. Once I told, everything started to go downhill. My family was torn apart and my dad lost his sister, since she took her husband’s side. And all I could feel was guilt and pain. My grades slipped drastically and I started skipping school and was just plain miserable.

I was just browsing Facebook when I saw a post from J&M Acres Horse Rescue about two Thoroughbred yearlings they had just rescued named Mickey and Minnie. I read their story and felt bad for them, but didn’t really think I could do anything about it. But then I saw Mickey’s picture and instantly fell in love with the thin red chestnut. I saw his adoption fee was $200, but $350 if he went home with Minnie, so I decided to take a look at her too. Instant love again. I browsed the rest of the horses and fell in love again again with China, a beautiful cremello mare with blue eyes. Right then and there it was settled. I would be bringing home three new beauties!

My dad told me that I couldn’t keep them at home with my two geldings, because of lack of space for three more, so I put up posters around school asking if anyone would board three horses. Not even two days later, I got a phone call from a lady named Sandra who told me that she would love to have more buddies for her two Arabians Danny and Lacey. She gave me free board as long as I helped out with hay!

I got in touch with a hauler named Kevan Garecki at H4 Horse Transport. He gave me a quote of $500 for all three, if the babies could share a box stall. So there began my fundraising.

I wrote up a speech and went around to all the classrooms at my small high school of less than 200 kids. I put up more posters, wrote to local papers and set up a booth at the craft fair, asking for donations to bring everyone home. I managed to raise $260! I told Kevan that all I had was $260, so he agreed to do a payment plan with me as long as I paid half the cost upfront.

With all the fundraising and keeping my mind away from the troubles I was having, I was healing. I was happy. My grades have improved and I have a normal attendance. Just finding something to help me forget, to heal, it’s indescribable.

When China, Mickey (Jude) and Minnie (Jojo) arrived, I was even more amazed. The babies are gorgeous! And huge! And China is twice as beautiful in real life! Kevan was amazing with handling them as we moved them into the pen with Danny and Lacey. Danny wasn’t too nice to the babies at first, but China defended them! It was amazing how she protected them and made sure that Danny didn’t hurt anyone. She’s the top horse in the herd! Now that everyone is settled, they all get along great!

Kevan Garecki is an amazing person. He was so gentle with them, and when I went to pay him, he refused my money. He said “That money is for the horses, for their vet bills, farrier and hay, not for me.” I was speechless. That is a true horseman right there, no doubt about it. One day, I will repay him.

As the babies have been fattening up, growing HUGE, and bonding with me, I have noticed a huge change in them as well as myself. Here we are, just healing, healing together. These horses saved me, they gave me something to hold on to when everything else was falling apart. And I will repay them too, by giving them a forever home together, where they will grow and be loved. I plan on re-training China in the spring, and begin to train the babies in the summer. I see a lot of potential in both the babies, and I think Jude might be my little sister’s Christmas present. She absolutely adores him and he loves her too! Of course, he would stay where he is, on forty four acres of pasture with three shelters, Jojo and Danny, Lacey and China.

Amy Lizee and Julie MacMillian are amazing people for giving my babies a second chance, and for giving all the other horses they have saved a second chance. Thank you guys so much <3
